The book cover for History of the Pequot War by Charles Orr

Karl Marx said religion is the opiate of the masses. If History of the Pequot War is anything to go by, religion is also an opiate for the colonizers known as the Puritans. The amount of times they give thanks to their god for giving them the providence to steal and murder is crazy and I’m only on page 15!

Seriously, though, I hate this book! It reminds me of the sort of history they taught when I was in grade school. It’s a perfect example of the Chinua Achebe quote: “Until the lions have their own historians, the history of the hunt will always glorify the hunter.”  The only reason I’m reading it is for research purposes: to get a better handle on the language of the time period the book I’m working on is set in, the 1630s.

I may just create centos out of it. I’ve already got one line:

If truth be wanting in history
the rest will prove to be but a vain narration.

I’ll definitely have more to say about this book as I torture myself by finishing it.
